Summer (2013)
Becoming Circus is a new project that has been in the back of my mind for several years and is just now starting to take form. In the 1910s, My grandfather's brothers started a circus, which traveled by train through the midwest and the south. In 2010, my partner and I began to seriously talk about starting a family. At this time, I embarked on a road trip to retrace the steps of my family circus. I started to think about how my own photographic practice could describe and incorporate attributes of my circus history-- a history that is at once fact and a fiction. These visual studies attempt to bridge the future and the past (photography and pageantry) and to give my children a sense of family history (however "real" that story may be).
